This was a global event in order to create awareness to the people about the changes of the climate, how much we have been wasting the energy by turning-on non-essential electrical wares. Did it work?
When I was half-way typing this post, I switched off the lights & fan, not because I wasted energy by turning them on, it's because I have to had the "Earth Hour" kind of feeling. I felt so hot & uneasy...
On 28th March 2009, 8.30pm-9.30pm, I didn't see any difference at my neighbourhood. Embarrassingly, I didn't see any difference in my own house. I turned off the lights in my room, but only my room. Probably the awareness did not get into the heart or mind of the people!? My mum said, 'Earth Hour campaign is just a gimmick, by turning off the lights for 1 hour will not change the people's mindset to go green.' I truly understand what she meant. People loves event. it's like a PARTY to them! Everything can be celebrated. Every day can be a count-down-day. Therefore, personally I think, it's more to a business gimmick, then an environmental-friendly awareness campaign.
However, I don't mean that this event was unsuccessful. Hopefully, the awareness to save energy & to prevent any abnormal climate changes WILL NOT STOP/END after 9.30pm of 28.03.2009. Lights are important, to allow us to see better to protect our eye-sight. Fan is important too, so that we won't feel hot & eventually affect our emotion (sometimes people do get angry easily due to hot weather!!). Switch the lights off if your room is bright enough & it doesn't hurt your eye-sight; switch the fan off if the day is windy.
Do something for your children & yourself. LOVE THE MOTHER EARTH!
